Kenya talks resume, African ministers arrive

East African foreign ministers arrived in Kenya on Wednesday for a meeting the opposition has threatened to demonstrate against, while the rival sides hammered away at talks to end the post-election crisis.The opposition has threatened more street protests if the government holds Thursday’s planned meeting of the seven-nation, regional bloc IGAD.

Kenya: Annan Calls for New Laws

Parliament will be required to legislate some proposals from the ongoing negotiation, Mr Kofi Annan, has said. Annan, who is the lead mediator, said Parliament would be called upon to debate and entrench some of the recommendations into the Constitution once the negotiations are complete.

Kenya’s death toll hits 1,000

MORE than 1,000 people have died and 304,000 displaced in Kenya’s post-election crisis, Kenya Red Cross said yesterday. “As of yesterday, we have over 1,000 people dead including the latest killings in Kisii, Migori and other places over the weekend,” says Red Cross spokesman. Uganda is so far hosting 12,000 refugees.

Peace Corps Suspends Work in Kenya

The Peace Corps said Tuesday it has suspended operations in Kenya after weeks of post-election violence, another blow to confidence as business leaders voiced concerns over the turmoil’s effect on the economy. The Peace Corps said it was withdrawing its remaining 58 volunteers. After clashes first erupted, 86 volunteers were sent home in January.

EAC may send troops to Kenya

The East African Community is considering sending a peace-keeping force to Kenya as one of the options in case the situation deteriorates. Currently, there are negotiations within the East African set-up. A decision has not yet been reached but negotiations are on.

Kenya: Kagame, President of Rwanda, calls for a re-run

RWANDAN President Paul Kagame has said a re-run of Kenya’s disputed December 27 presidential poll should be considered seriously among options to stem the tide of post-election violence in the country. “I want to make my position clear on this matter. There are three scenarios of ending this situation and one of them is a re-run.”
